Body found in sunken Sewol ferry in South Korea

Search divers in South Korea have found a body in the sunken Sewol ferry, six months after it capsized leaving more than 300 people, mainly students, dead.

The body was found in a woman’s toilet, said Yonhap. It is the first body to be recovered in three months.

The ferry carrying 476 people sank in April. The official death toll stands at 295, but nine bodies have yet to be recovered by rescue teams.

The captain of the ferry is standing trial, charged with negligent homicide.

Prosecutors have sought the death penalty for Lee Joon-seok and harsh penalties for the crew.

On Monday they concluded putting their case before a court in the city of Gwangju. They argued he did not make any effort to rescue passengers and deserved a death sentence.

The last time divers found a body was on 18 July when a female cook was found in the ferry’s cafeteria.

The families of the missing passengers have refused to allow the ship to be hoisted up as they are concerned that the rest of the bodies might be swept out to sea.

Investigators have said a combination of cargo overloading, illegal modification of the vessel and inexperienced helmsmanship was behind the disaster.

The ship’s sinking sparked widespread grief and anger in South Korea.

Hawaldar Anchors in Pakistan

By Haris Hashmi • Oct 23rd, 2014
On social media, the term ‘hawaldar anchor‘ is used for those Pakistani TV anchors who explicitly, shamelessly, brazenly, and immorally support establishment and its toadies. In the recent London Plan conspiracy, where 90% of media was compromised by the handlers, numerous hawaldar anchors surfaced to the scene.

In Pakistan, there always been journalists who remain on the payroll of agencies, politicians, mafias, foreign countries, NGOs etc. Lifafa journalists is another notorious term which refers to the journalist who takes money from the politicians. Earlier it only referred to the journalists who took money from Sharif brothers, and now is widely used for any journalist who takes money from any politician.

The main difference between these days and the days of yore is that there was some semblance of curtain over these shady dealings. It was all done behind the scene, and it was kind of hard for the common people to identify the lifafa journalists. But for the last few months, in electronic media, the moment an anchor or analyst opens his or her mouth, you can tell his or her affiliation with closed eyes.

So much is the status of journalism is in Pakistan right now, that the whole channels with all their anchors, reporters, analysts, editors and other staff have been bought and being used. The prime example is ARY News. Not a single person working in ARY is neutral or unbiased. All of their anchors are supporting Imran, Qadri, and establishment. Everybody has his own mode of crime.

From Mubasher Lucman to Sami Ibrahim, from Kashif Abbassi to Dr. Danish, and all the other anchors and analysts are proving more loyal to establishment than establishment. For the last 5 months, they are on the mission of throwing out the Nawaz regime, but have failed so far. They were unable to win election for Imran Khan and now they are unable to make him premier through shortcut so far.

In Express News and Dunya News, 90% of anchors and analysts are hawaldars. From Arshad Sharif to Shahzeb Khanzada, from Waseem Badami to Kamran Shahid, from Mehar Bukhari to Asma Sherazi, from Nadeem Malik to scores of others are disgustingly hawaldars.

Most of these hawaldar anchors have landed through parachute in this profession. They know very well that there only way to earn blind money and live like a price is to keep spreading lies, sensation and anarchy and completing the agenda of establishment to not to let a democratic government strengthen.

Bilawal Bad Boy for MQM and PTI

MQM also didn’t waste a second and replied in the same tone to PPP. Though PML-N’s leadership still is maintaining decency, but their lower-level leaders have started answering Imran in the same tone. It seems that in this fight of dirty politics, the first causality is decency. Credit goes to Imran Khan and his PTI.

PPP patron-in-chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s comments against MQM were full of threats. This is a complete turn from the past years policy of reconciliation from Bilawal’s father Asif Ali Zardari. Contrary to what many believe, its not the repetition of Zulfikar Mirza episode.

During that time, the policy of PPP was that Zulfikar Mirza used to beat MQM with stick, and Rehman Malik used to rush to London to offer olive branch and carrots. At that time, PPP threw everyone on lots of confusion as half party seemed to hate MQM, and half seemed to not to live without it.

This time, PPP’s stance seems one so far. They haven’t taken their statement back, and they haven’t apologized. Rehman Malik hasn’t gone to MQM with carrots, and Khurshid Shah, the opposition leader of PPP, is defending Bilawal’s statement in every TV channel.

Khurshid Shah has even made a rare attack on Atlaf Hussain and said that why Altaf is scot-free to abuse anyone and why can’t he be criticized? He asked why Altaf’s comments are fine and others’ wrong. To be fair with Khurshid Shah, he is bang right there.

It seems that by attacking MQM in Karachi and by attacking PTI in Punjab, PPP has scrambling to its feet for its revival. Bilawal is their only and last chance to make a come back in Pakistani politics and they think that by showing a defiance and aggression, they can achieve it. May be they are right.

Eid holidays: No teachers show up at anti-dengue camps

“Our job is teaching. Forcing us to perform extra duties [for other departments] is compromising students’ grades, for which teachers are always held responsible,” said Raja Ayaz Satti, a teacher at the Government High School No. 1 Rawalpindi.

He said that teachers were often asked to perform additional duties during emergencies, but they were never given prior training.

The teachers claimed that under a ‘well-thought-out conspiracy’, they were being involved in other tasks to bring a bad name to the state-run schools and make a case for their privatisation.

“It is not a teacher’s job to give polio drops to children. If we have to perform this duty, then there is no need to regularise thousands of lady health workers,” said Imtiaz Abbasi, a member of the Punjab Teachers’ Union (PTU).

He said that teachers should only facilitate polio teams in schools to help make drives successful instead of performing field duties.

PTU General Secretary Rana Liaquat said that teachers also have families and social lives. “Teachers also want to spend time with their children and families on special occasions. It’s ridiculous to ask a teacher to sit at health camps to create awareness about a disease. That is the job of health workers,” he said.

“There are thousands of health workers, doctors and other health officials who should be directed to attend such camps,” he said, adding that the Supreme Court also had also issued a verdict ordering that teachers should not be engaged in duties which are not directly connected to teaching and education.

“We have also written to the education secretary about the issue but have yet to receive a response,” he said. He suggested that hundreds of jobless qualified youth should be engaged in such activities and the money being given to teachers for performing such duties should be given to them instead.

Raja Shahid Mubarak, a teacher and member the PTU, said that if the health department was under-staffed, the government should immediately start recruitment.  “Doing so will create jobs and improve education standards in government schools,” he said.

“Throughout the year, we are engaged in paper checking, vaccination drives, emergency duties and elections duties, which is compromising school results,” he added.

Education Executive District Officer Qazi Zahoorul Haq could not be reached for comment despite repeated attempts on his cell phone.
