LAHORE: Celebrated journalist-poet-lyricist, Riaz-ur-Rehman Saghar, known for the beautiful songs he penned for Pakistani as well as Indian films, lost his battle against cancer here on Saturday night, he was 72, Geo News reported.
According to sources the cine-song-writer was under treatment for cancer for the last many days at a local private hospital.
His funeral prayer will be offered in Commerce College ground here tomorrow afternoon.
As a writer of more than 2000 ballads Saghar’s lyrical excellence manifested in many movies including ‘Kabhi to Nazar Milao’, ‘Chief Saab’, ‘Sargam’, ‘Ghoongat’, ‘Inteha’, ‘Mohabattan Sachian’, ‘Samjotha Express’, ‘Ishq Kuda’ to name a few.
Saghar versed vocals for many singers such as Hadiqa Kiani’s songs ‘Dupatta Mera Malmal Da’ and ‘Yaad Sajan Di Ayi’. He also wrote the duet ‘Kabhi to Nazar Milao’ sang by Asha Bhosle and Adnan Sami Khan. Saghar also authored all the ten songs for singer Fariha Pervez’s album ‘O Vela Yad Kar 2001.’
His most popular film tracks come from the movie ‘Sargam’, which were primarily sung by Adnan Sami Khan and Hadiqa Kiani.
One of his more recently written songs ‘Main Tenu Samjhawan Ki’ was featured in the Punjabi movie ‘Virsa’, A Punjabi language Pakistan-India joint venture. The soothing song just went viral.
Saghar was also an instrumental force behind the children’s program ‘Aangan Aangan Tarey’, aired from PTV during the early nineties. The program launched the career of Hadiqa Kiani as a singer.
Apart from being a songwriter, Riaz-ur-Rehman has channelized his poetic skills in different ways.
His poetic column appears in the newspaper Nawa-e-Waqt every week, while he also wrote his travel experience of China in the form of a poem which used to be published in the newspaper weekly.
‘Camera Qalam Aur Dunya’ and ‘Lahore Ta Bombay Barasta Dehli’ are among the travelogues he has written.
His other published works inlcude ‘Aangan Aangan Taaray’, ‘Arz Kiya Hai’, ‘Chand Jharokay Mai’, ‘Who Bhi Kya Din Thay.’
